Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Ahmedabad | Sightseeing tour in Ahmedabad

Soon after arrival at Ahmedabad airport/railway station, proceed towards the hotel. After resting for sometime, head for a sightseeing tour of this city.Start the tour with a visit to Gandhi Ashram, which was the abode of Mahatma Gandhiji till the time he left for Dandi March. It is situated on the banks of Sabarmati River and hence, is popularly known as Sabarmati Ashram. This ashram served as an important centre for activities related to Indian independence and upliftment of society. It now houses a museum, which exhibits various photographs, manuscripts, paintings and literature books written by Gandhiji. Some items related to Gandhiji, such as a spinning wheel and writing desk are also showcased inside this museum.

After exploring this place, head towards the beautifully-constructed Hutheesing Jain Temple. This temple, built by a rich merchant named Sheth Hutheesing, is a revered shrine for Jainism followers. The presiding deity in this temple is Shri Dharmnath, who was the 5th Jain Tirthankar. Sonpura and Salat community artisans and craftsmen involved in the construction of this temple have done excellent carving work on the stones. An attractive feature of this temple is the 78-feet tall Mahavir Stambha, which lies in the outer courtyard.

Thereafter, continue sightseeing and visit the small town of Adalaj. The prominent attraction of this place is the Adalaj Stepwell. This extraordinary vav or stepwell was built by Queen Rudabai in the year 1499. It is an excellent example of Indo-Islamic style of architecture and has Islamic floral patterns and exquisite carvings on the walls and pillars. Along with its architecture, this place is also recognised for being a holy site.

Day 2 – Drive from Ahmedabad to Jamnagar (330 km/approx. 6 hours)

In the morning, check-out from the hotel and embark on a road journey towards Jamnagar, which is among the largest cities in the state of Gujarat. This city is a prominent pearl fishing centre and hence, is also referred to as the Oyster of India. Other than this, it is also known for quality Bandhani work, which is a traditional way to dye fabric. On arrival at Jamnagar, check-in at the hotel and rest for sometime. Later, in the evening, leave the hotel for a visit to the Bala Hanuman Temple. After spending some peaceful time in this temple, return to the hotel and stay overnight.

Day 3 – Drive from Jamnagar to Dwarka (150 km/approx. 3 hours) | Sightseeing in Dwarka

Check-out from the hotel and drive towards Dwarka, which is known as the kingdom of Lord Krishna. It is believed that Lord Krishna after leaving Mathura came to Dwarka and spent a major part of his life here. This town is counted among the four principal holy places (char dham) for Hindus, and a visit to this place is considered auspicious.

Upon arrival at Dwarka visit numerous Hindu temples dotted across the region. Start the tour with a visit to Dwarkadish Temple, which is also known as Jagat Mandir. Located on Gomti creek, this temple is believed to be built 2500 years ago by Vajranabh – grandson of Lord Krishna. A big flag made with 52 yards of cloth hovers at the top of the temple and can be visible from a distance of around 10 kilometres. There are two gateways at the temple, one for the entry known as Swarga Dwar and one for the exit, known as Moksha Dwar. The entire construction of the temple has been done using soft limestone. The exquisite ornamentation around the shrine of Lord Dwarkadish is stunning.

Later, head towards Beyt Dwarka, which is popularly known as Beyt Shankhodhar. It is a small island, but offers various opportunities for marine excursions, camping and spotting dolphins. As per the archaeological excavations and religious manuscripts, it is believed to be the original home of Lord Krishna. To reach this island from the main town, you can take a ferry ride from Okha port jetty.Thereafter, head towards Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, which is situated between Beyt Dwarka Island and city of Dwarka. It is a Lord Shiva Temple and is among the 12 Swayambhu – self existent jyotirlingas in the world. The major attractions of this temple are a 25-metre tall idol of Lord Shiva in a sitting posture and a lush green garden with a pond.

Another important religious site that deserves a visit is Rukmini Devi Temple. This temple is dedicated to Devi Rukmini, who was the wife of Lord Krishna. This temple is situated at a distance of 2 km from Jagat Mandir and has many legends associated with it. The intricately-carved exteriors of this temple with sculptured human figures and elephants are worth adoring.

Dwarka to somanth

Day 4 – Drive from Dwarka to Somnath | En route visit Porbandar (240 km/approx. 5 hours)

In the morning, get ready and check-out from the hotel. During the journey towards Somnath, visit Porbandar, which is the birthplace of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It is also a famous industrial centre in the state of Gujarat. While touring this destination, visit the famous Kirti Mandir, which is the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi. A museum within the premises displays old photographs and a collection of books on Gandhian philosophy. Another prominent attraction here is Sudama Temple, which is dedicated to Sudamaji, who was a friend of Lord Krishna. After exploring both these places, continue your journey towards Somnath.

On arrival at Somnath, visit the famous Somnath Mahadev Temple – believed to be constructed in gold by Somraj, the moon god. Rebuilt several times, the present temple was built in the year 1951. This temple, constructed in the Chalukyan style architecture, has a 50-metre tall shikhara, silver doors, a beautiful idol of Nandi and a shivalinga at the centre. Enjoy overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 5 – Drive from Somnath to Ahmedabad (430 km/approx. 8 hours) | Departure from Ahmedabad
