Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is enveloped by the verdant hills of Kegalle. This orphanage is one of its kind, where the baby elephants weight 60kgs or more. This orphanage holds the distinction of being the world's first and only elephant orphanage established to feed, nurse and house young elephants lost or abandoned by their mothers. The others occupants are those that have been displaced from their natural environs by development projects or those that were found in a wounded condition. Here, the visitors can watch the baby elephants being fed milk from gigantic feeding bottles or being bathed in the rivers which flow nearby, thereby creating an unforgettable sight and a wonderful experience. This orphanage, established in 1975 by the Wildlife Department and National Zoological Gardens, has subsequently developed into a breeding program through which more than twenty five elephants have been born since 1984

Kandy is a lovely exotic city, and also serves as the hill capital of Sri Lanka. This beautiful place, which was the last stronghold of the Sinhala kings, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site which has retained its aura of grandeur which time has not affected. Enveloped by hills, with a serene lake at its center, its home to one of the most renowned temple which enshrines the Tooth Relic of the Buddha and the Royal Botanical Gardens, which displays the world's best collection of orchids. Kandy can be defined as a cultural sanctuary where numerous legends, folklore and traditions are still kept alive. Kandy, as well as its satellite villages, are the center of the islands' handicraft industry (which is mainly focused on items of wood, brass and silver), exquisite silver or gold jewelry and precious gems of many varieties, including the world's best blue and star sapphires. One of the main attractions of the city is the Esala Perahera, when a replica of the casket enclosing the Tooth is taken in procession for ten glittering nights in July/August by exotically costumed dances, drummers and approximately 100 elephants.
